2018 Year In Review


To start 2019, we've decided to summarise all notable headlines and game releases that occurred last year in gaming. This year would see us return to a monthly summary eventful stories that happen throughout 2018. Also if you're interested in previous versions then you can read 2017 here and 2016 here



January

ChopUp and Gamsole were chosen to be amongst the 20 startups being featured in Mobile Africa's documentary about African innovation, entrepreneurship and the rise of mobile technology.


February

Deluxe Creations Studios' Edu Shola spoke on his life as a game developer and how he intends to solve an environmental problem using a game.


March

Financial Times writes a piece on how Nigerian Game Developers fight for their piece of the global mobile gaming market.

ChopUp secured a worldwide distribution deal with GameMine.


April

Bestman Games launched their first video game. The tabletop gaming company decided to release a digital version of their first proprietary board game; The Bible Game: Saints & Sinners on the App Store and Google Play.

Gamsole in partnership with Diamond Bank launched Dreamville; a financial entertainment service platform game for youths.


May

The Fearless Gaming Tournament kicked off with regional qualifiers taking place across 5 major national cities (Ibadan, Lagos, Benin City, Calabar and Abuja).

ChopUp released their first 3D racing game titled Tear Rubber Racing.

Geothe Institue created the Enter Africa - Gamify Your City project and called for local ideas that showcased the future of 15 African Cities with Lagos being was one of them.


June

Deluxe Creation Studios jumped on the battle royale frenzy and released Stickman Fight - Save Your World (Battle Royale). In addition Tap and Bounce with the Beat, a rhythm-based action platformer was also released on the Google Play store.


July

Lukmon Agboola of OvaPlay released Retro2ME, a full-featured J2ME(Java Mobile) emulator.

Techpoint Africa did a feature on Emmanuel Omene, the Nigerian game developer cashing out big on Upwork.


August

Nibcard; the tabletop gaming company got fully funded on Indiegogo for their Tabletop Cafe and 14 Board Games from Africa.

Lizzies Creation rebranded as ZenAfri and launched a new episodic interactive app.

Gamsole marked the release of their first ever video game on the iOS App Store with Gidi Run 2.


September

BeastMode Games brought the widely popular HQ Trivia live show to Nigeria in the form of TQ Trivia: Small Quiz Big Money.

The 7th and biggest edition of the LagosComicCon was held at the Landmark Event Center.

Gbrossoft released their third game on steam titled The Amazonian Dread.


October

A passionate gamer gave his viewpoint and opinion about setting up a AAA Gaming Industry in Nigeria.


November

The 3rd edition of the African Board Game Convention (ABCON) held in Abuja and also introduced the ABCON awards.

Black Ring, the team behind ThroneOfGods released a new mobile adventure game on Play Store titled GAMBA

Naija Whot reached a Milestone of a Million Downloads on the Play Store

ZenAfri's CEO, Elizabeth Kperrun was shortlisted for the 2019 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. The prize which is organised by the Royale Academy of Engineering recognises the most promising entrepreneurial engineers from across sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. SID of MavinRecords jumped into the gaming space with the launch of an eSports team called Sidizens.


December

The ChopUp team (comprised of Zubair Abubakar, Bayo Puddicombe and Daniel Micah) joined Paga as its first set of Nigerian based engineers.

The West African Game Expo (WAGE) 2018 got cancelled after an unprecedented low turnout. The event was first scheduled to hold on the 1st - 3rd of November but was postponed due to unforeseen delays in preparation.

Naija Game Evolution (an esports gaming company) held its first entertainment convention titled Game Evolution Convention (GECON) and it featured the grand finale of the Fearless Gaming Tournament.

Naija Ludo from Tonielrosoft hit a million downloads and became the fastest Nigerian video game ever to do so in 1136 days.


Two political Games were released in anticipation of the 2019 elections. Landa Studios released APC vs PDP on both iOS and Android while Ose Games released Naija Defense on the PlayStore with iOS coming soon.
Gbrossoft released their second mobile game on the PlayStore titled Outlander
